The Year of Czech Music

Czech music is enjoyed on many opera stages. Thanks to collaborations with National Theatres in Brno and Prague, OperaVision has been extending the reach of both well- and little-known Czech music abroad. Discover through our selection below how Smetana’s operas, built on national history and rich in folkloric melodies, found continuity in Dvořák’s romantic style and Janáček’s modernism.

1824 was the year of birth of Bedřich Smetana, one of the greatest Czech composers. A hundred years later, in 1924, the Year of Czech Music was celebrated for the first time. In 2024, we celebrate Czech music once again with a selection of songs and arias by Smetana, Dvořák, Janáček, and the contemporary composer Ivan Acher.
