Basses

Bass is the lowest voice type in classical singing, characterised by rich, deep and resonant tones.

A true operatic bass voice is rare, which means roles are sometimes sung by bass-baritones. In orchestras, the timbre of the bass voice is often likened to that of the bassoon, trombone or double bass.

After the 17th century, the baritone and bass voices began to be recognised as distinct categories, with the darker qualities of bass voices becoming increasingly associated with characters of high rank, villains or the elderly. But basses can often take on comedic roles, such as buffoons or servants, and then referred to as buffo-basses.
